COMMUNITY LEAD FELLOWSHIP

Betting on community youth to be changemakers

Community Lead (CL) Fellowship is Alohomora's flagship leadership and facilitator development program. Young people from the local communities we work with join in as fellows, and after an intensive training period, become CareerShala facilitators - further empowering young people to build thriving careers. This model of community based facilitators is based on the key tenet of grassroot empowerment - young people when armed with confidence and self-belief, further empower their communities.

Our community leads bring alive the core of our philosophy of trusting young people to take charge of their own learning. Despite coming from underserved backgrounds themselves, our CLs have consistently created safe spaces for students to share about their aspirations, managed relations with school staff and parents, and navigated the uncertainties of the career decision making process with their students.

We believe the best way to inspire our students is to bring to them people who they could connect with and also look up to as role models. We are proud that our community leads have stood true to this belief!

Why CLs?

We are often asked why we choose young people from the communities we work with, to drive and facilitate our program.

Scalability

Our program is truly scalable because it does not depend on scarcely available and expensive human resources, making it accessible for the communities we work with. Using local talented young people makes it possible for quality career exploration content to reach the fingertips of every student in India irrespective of their socio-economic backgrounds.

Relatability

Our students love their didis and bhaiyas! The implicit hierarchies in traditional classrooms often create barriers in communication and expression. Students share they are more comfortable expressing their thoughts and questions with facilitators who are similar to them in age and demeanour - they feel better understood and more accepted in a space where they see the facilitator as one of them.

Local empowerment

The fellowship provides local youth an opportunity to do meaningful and impactful work that builds their personality and leadership, allowing them to further empower their communities.

Contextualisation

Youth facilitators, coming from backgrounds similar to those of our students, deeply understand their context. They are able to give the right examples, references and blueprints best suited for the student's understanding.

CL Academy

We plan a thorough induction program for our CLs, providing them many opportunities to explore, reflect and learn from each other. They also get to go to the field and facilitate actual sessions, getting a flavour of what it means to be responsible for their classrooms.
